Please direct any questions, comments, or concerns to Race Director, Katy Renner at Solo racers are encouraged to bring their own kayak. Maps will be distributed on the morning of the event at check in. Please note that this event is self-supported meaning you carry with you, all that you need: water, food, first aid, etc. There will be very few rules of travel, teams will choose their own route/strategy (with mode of travel specified for checkpoints). Your team will need a basic understanding of terrain features and distance measure. The maps are pre-plotted topographic maps from. Checkpoints for the 6-hour Course will be on Topographic maps. Both courses you will have access ONLY to the gear, food and drink that you have on your bike or in your pack. A team could choose to skip checkpoints and shorten the course and still have an official finish, though probably not place in the top 10. There will be several checkpoints that are mandatory (transition areas), but most are not. Racers should be prepared for 20+ miles of biking, 10 miles of hiking, and 1-2 miles of paddling. The race will include trekking both on and off hiking trails, biking on single track and paved trails, paddling on the lake, all while orienteering their way through the park. Racers will need to be prepared for 6-8 miles of trekking on paved trails as well as through brush, trees, and maybe even water.Ħ-hour racers will receive topographic maps with all checkpoints pre-plotted at packet pickup on race morning. This course is designed for the beginner, but you may encounter a few difficult challenges. The team that completes all the checkpoints (or more than other teams) with the fastest time will win the race.Ģ-hour racers will trek to all of their checkpoints and may encounter a few extra challenges along the way. Have a bike and ready to crush the mountain bike trails? Check out the 6-hour race that will have racers trekking, biking, and paddling their way through the park. Looking for a little adventure? Check out the 2-hour race that is all on foot (TREKKING ONLY) and open to solos and teams. The race will happen rain or shine, so ensure you are prepared for any type of weather. The park sits on the western edge of Johnson County, known to its most avid patrons as the "gem" of western Johnson County. ![]() ![]() Dates haven’t been confirmed for 2016, but can’t wait to visit.Racers will enjoy hundreds of acres of nature, hiking, and biking trails, as well as beautifully preserved prairie grasslands. The proximity of the spectators is unbelievable and the telegraph poles and buildings are surrounded with nothing more than old-school hay bales. The ‘modern’ bikes are limited to 125cc but the racing is still pretty scary. The event began in 1954 and has continued to battle on despite the inherent dangers. The event is held in the small archaic town of La Bañeza and it’s madder than anything we have in the UK. So it might come as a surprise that Spain has its very own ‘real road race’. Other European countries have the luxury of space and high investment, so very quickly after World War Two we moved off the roads and onto specially designed tracks. There is also a unique culture which accepts the danger of these events. Ireland is a relatively small Island, so there isn’t the space for vast purpose built circuits. ![]() And when you look at the facts, this unorthodox approach makes sense. Irish motorcycle racing originally started out on the roads and it has remained there to this day. Paulo Gonçalves demonstrated this perfectly when he had a monster crash this year, promptly jumping straight back onto his bike and riding off - tough or what? Being able to ride injured is also a key prerequisite, because let’s face it, you’re probably going to have an off. A good mechanical knowledge is key in order to fix any problems on the fly and navigation is very difficult with riders having to rely on nothing but vague pace notes. Riders need to have a deep inner resolve to cope with the challenges thrown at them. Unfortunately after security threats the event had to be moved to South America in 2009 which is where it remains to this day. Cyril Neveu was the first motorcycle winner in ’78 cementing bikes at the heart of the event. It was a brilliant mix of terrain including the iconic African Dunes which could trap bikers for days on end. The classic route, first run in 1978, started in Paris and finished in Dakar, Senegal. The Dakar Rally encapsulates everything we love about bikes camaraderie, high speeds and adventure.
